The City Centre

The historic centre is characterised by distinctive porticos housing numerous shops for shopping, while the inner streets host typical restaurants where you can enjoy traditional dishes of Sardinian culture.

An absolute must-see is the Sanctuary of Our Lady Bonaria, built in Gothic style, which, besides being one of the symbols of Cagliari’s history and tradition, is a place from which to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. Its staircase leads you directly to the seafront promenade.

For animal lovers, we suggest a visit to the Molentargius park, where you can admire some protected species such as donkeys and pink flamingos, which first nested here in 1993 and have made it their home. Today, the Flamingo has become a symbol of the region.

In the city, there are several towers built in the 14th century that are counted among the best military works in history. The most impressive is the elephant tower, about 30 metres high, from which you can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view.

A journey through history can continue in the Necropolis of Tuvixeddu, one of the largest Punic necropolises still in existence, covering 80 hectares of land

Typical dishes

We talk about Cagliari and therefore it is impossible not to talk about food:

You should know that every Sardinian city has its own typical pizza and the one from Cagliari is the pizzetta sfoglia.
It is a double layer of puff pastry enclosing a delicious tomato sauce and often a caper and anchovy paste. A flavour that every Cagliari resident cannot do without for a long time.

Another delicacy to try is Sardinian fregola with clams, a dish that encompasses the flavours and aromas of the Mediterranean Sea.
Fregola is a type of durum wheat semolina pasta produced in Sardinia and is made by ‘rolling’ the semolina in an earthenware bowl and then toasting it in the oven.

For meat lovers, Porceddu is a delicious dish made from Sardinian suckling pig meat. Taken from Spanish culture, the recipe originated as an Easter tradition. Today it involves the meat of a piglet cooked on a spit, flavoured with nutmeg, thyme, myrtle, saffron, black pepper and mint.

Coming to dessert, the seada is a special dessert, with a round shape similar to a ravioli. The filling is made of cheese, mainly Sardinian pecorino, which is flavoured with lemon peel and remains stringy when cooked, while the outer casing is made of a semolina dough. Everything is fried and served covered with honey or sugar.
